Lake Boat

Small Lake HouseReferencing the element of water, The Lantern Lake Boat house can be built on the water with a covered boat slip, instead of a garage, or near the water with an adjacent boat slip. Reminiscent of a cottage or cabin, the Lake Boat is designed to take advantage of beautiful water views, making the occupants feel more connected with nature, while living in an eco friendly environment.

The Lantern glows during the day, powered by the intense reflection of the sun off of both the white roof and the Kalwall panels covering the deck and dock. Reminiscent of a Chinese lantern, we choose to establish the relationship between land, water, and sun. We achieve this by selecting materials that engage the maximum amount of natural light throughout the day, both inside and outside of the home. At night, “The Lantern Effect” is really demonstrable as light from inside the home makes the house appear to float on water as it’s dispersed through the Kalwall panels.

Small Lake Boat House

Water circulates throughout the home via a full Trombe wall housed in stainless steel drums. The Trombe wall and clerestory windows take advantage of passive heating on the south-facing wall of The Lantern. The Kalwall panels may be removed and stored directly on the Trombe wall to intensify the solar gain when desired. A Trombe wall is a perfect fit for the vacation retreat requiring minimal future maintenance while keeping current construction costs down. Tremendous savings are seen as a result of lower heating and cooling costs over the life of the home.

Floor Plan Small Lake House

The floor plan design connects you to nature and the movement of the sun. We accomplish this by placing the private master bedroom on the east end of the house in anticipation of the beautiful sunrise. During the day, you might be active in the art studio on the north side of the home or outside in the garden. Or you may spend time in the library or experimenting in the kitchen. At the end of the day, you will relax while taking in the breathtaking sunset directly over the lake to the west. Guests will enjoy the same variations of light in the loft which features open bookshelves and a full west view out over the lake.

Inside The Lake Boat House

Inside, natural materials comprise The Lantern, including a vaulted wood ceiling finished in a tongue-in-groove pattern over the main living area, library/office, and master bedroom for an open, clean appearance. The Trombe wall brings unfinished stainless steel inside adding a modern element alongside the wood ceilings. The main living space is directly over the water with buoys for support. The central retaining wall runs along the north/south axis grounding the home, while the living space provides a direct view and open door onto the water erasing the barrier between nature and man. The iron steel stair treads mimic the bones of the Kalwall canopy as they lead to the loft.

Lake Boat House Deck

The pièce de résistance to living on the lake is the deck off of your living area. Go on and jump directly into the shimmering water. The west facing wall is finished with a full glass roll up door that allows the living area to open fully onto the water. The deck and boat slip also allow for an amphibious entrance rather than a traditional garage, for a lakeside home that is off the beaten path.
